Before we get your imaginations running wild to help with our new Fulham FC Foundation brief, we wanted to share some info on the animation that will be created from the ideas YOU come up with. Below you'll also find some questions and thought-starters to inspire your art.
About the final animation
- It will be showing a conversation between two friends about mental health
- The characters will bump into each other in the park and start talking about why one of them did not attend football training which leads to a conversation about their struggles and mental health
- One of the characters in the animation will also offer advice on things that could help, including any specific organizations or contacts they know of

- What type of language could someone use to make you feel comfortable with talking about your potential problems?

Here are our creative writing tips to help get you started!
Being creative is great for the most part, but when it comes to ‘writer's block’, you can feel like tearing your hair out! How many times have you sat down to do something and just stared at a blank screen with zero ideas? We definitely have. The important thing to remember is that everyone has moments of feeling uninspired and just like the weather, some days are good and some are bad, but these things always pass, so don’t be too hard on yourself.
We’ve curated some hacks to help kick that imagination up the butt so you can get back to doing what you do best: being creative! Different things work for different people so why not give them all a go and see which is the best fit for you?
Here are some of our favorite things to try when you hit that creative wall:
This is probably the most recommended way to get over your writing slump. All you need to do is set a timer for a couple of minutes and write down whatever comes into your head; this could be what you can see, what you’re feeling or even what you dreamt about last night - literally anything. Writing without the pressure of it needing to achieve anything gets all those creative juices flowing. You can even bin it afterward, so no one has to see it.
Writing a daily journal or diary is a great way to practice turning your thoughts and feelings into structured writing - and the consistency of it helps to make writing come naturally. Why not write down what you did today, who you hung out with or what’s on your mind? It also doubles up as a fun way to capture all your memories - so what have you got to lose?
Make mood boards:
If your imagination isn’t translating into the written word, then just create your thoughts through imagery until you feel inspired. You could do it physically by cutting pictures out of magazines, or using your own photos and making them into a collage. You could create a Pinterest board, or a new collection on your Instagram to save things too. If you can represent what you want to say through pictures then you’re already halfway there.
Go for a walk:
When you’re feeling totally uninspired, nature can be a great way of getting your brain feeling refreshed. Even just the fact that you’re taking a break and getting some fresh air can be a super useful reset. If you can, try and go without any headphones so you can listen to the sounds of outside, engaging all of your senses to spark imagination. Without distractions whizzing through your mind, you'll soon have it filling up with new ideas.
It sounds silly but sometimes just watching others go about their day-to-day stuff can be really interesting and inspiring! If you’re stuck for a storyline or need to think about a new character, why not go somewhere busy and just observe others? It might give you a great idea for a plot or personality.
Have a tech break
As much as we all love our phones, they can be quite overwhelming for our brains (not to mention distracting!), and actually taking an hour to switch them off, or leaving them behind and observing the physical world can be great for our imagination. Maybe go outside for a while, have a chat with someone, or take in your space by actively noticing the things around you. This can also really help to get you back into the present moment when you’re feeling stressed or anxious - so a double winner.
Get out and about:
Depending on your subject, you could try doing something related to what you actually want to write about. For example, if you want to write about football, why not go and play football or see a football game? Or if you were trying to write about mental health, could you initiate a conversation with a friend about how they’ve been feeling? Then use these experiences to write down how it made you feel. Doing these things knowing you’re trying to write about them will make you start to see things differently.
Bounce off friends:
Sometimes you can be so close to an idea, but you just can’t quite see the head or tail of it! That’s when it’s a great time to chat the idea through with your friends or family. Someone might suggest approaching it in a way that you haven’t thought of which, in turn, might spark a new idea for you. Think of it as listening to a conversation between friends, and as the chat goes on, the more you have to say as it sparks new thoughts in your brain.
Sometimes the best thing to do when you’re stuck for ideas is to go off and do something entirely different. Try and do an activity that will take your mind off what it is you’re trying to work on. You could exercise, hang out with mates or watch a film - whatever helps you to switch off. By taking a break, your brain has a chance to naturally process ideas and when you go back to it you might have a completely fresh perspective.
Don’t be scared of failure:
This is probably the most important of them all; don’t fear failure. Creativity hates fear and as soon as you put too much pressure on yourself to succeed, your imagination seeps away! Tell yourself that it’s okay to fail and that some of the most successful creatives in this world messed up several times before they came out on top. Hang in there - you can do it!
