Anybody hoping to make a living from their own work has to be ready to dive head first into the world of online marketing, as daunting as it may seem.

Here’s a rundown of the best and most important ways to make a good first impression and maximise your reach with potential buyers, whether it be art, music, or anything in-between. Don’t worry, we won’t go full nerd and get deep into the nitty gritty of coding or hacking, just give you a great place to get started. 


Purchase a professional email address

This probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind, right? Yes, although a lot of us primarily communicate via Instagram, Facebook, or WhatsApp, email addresses are still super important to make a good impression. 

We’d recommend avoiding free email hosts like Hotmail or Gmail, as while these are useful for personal contacts, they can make a business look unprofessional to potential customers or buyers. Would you take an email from Amazon just as seriously if it came from an account that read ‘jeffbezos@hotmail.com’? Probably not. 

Purchasing an email account that ties to a website or company name is super easy and affordable, too. You won’t need to splash out big bucks to get a name change. A quick search online will bring up tons of domain provider options and some are as cheap as £1 a month. So search around! It’s a small effort and a little extra fee for a serious boost to any professional profile. 


Launch and maintain a website 

What’s an email address without an actual website? Chances are we don’t need to go into too much detail on this, but just in case – make sure to always build one! No matter what the company does, from painting to banking, it must have a site that’s easily available to anybody.

It used to be ridiculously complicated to set up, but thankfully sites like WIX, Squarespace, and Mailchimp have simplified the process significantly over the last decade or so. Creating a site is now relatively easy and it’s a great place to show off products, provide links to other branded social media pages, and give customers a place to get in touch. 

If you haven’t got a website going yet it should be the biggest priority. So get on it! Time is of the essence.


Give projects or businesses high-quality names

There’s no point spending tons of effort on a great product if the name of the business itself is a bit naff. In fact, getting a brand’s final title down could be considered the most important aspect of digital marketing, as it’s often the first thing anybody will come across when interacting with a company. 

So make sure it’s a good one! Try to pick something that’s easy to spell and pronounce. Search around for any trademarks or similar sounding companies, and the more a name resonates with people the better. Always do background checks on any chosen name too, just in case it’s synonymous with something dodgy or problematic, and get feedback from colleagues, friends, and randomly chosen testers. 

Once they’re all in agreement that your company name bangs, it’s ready to go. 


Set up a payment system

The days of cash are long gone, and most of us now prefer to pay for item via contactless cards, Apple Pay, or third-party services like PayPal. Setting these up on a website is essential and will help hugely in generating sales. The quicker and convenient the paying method the better, as long as it’s secure. 

Signing up for a whole new account on a website is a big ask, and most consumers are unlikely to do so unless they really want a product. You’ll be hard pressed to get lots of paying clients or customers to jump through hoops unless it’s a PlayStation 5 or an iPhone. Adding a PayPal button is simple and you can create one straight from the official PayPal website.
